The course will begin with a review on classical materials and then focus on

  1. Introduction to modern classes of functional materials and their properties: materials for energy, advanced displays, and biomedical devices
  2. Nanoscale Materials: quantum dots, graphene and nanocomposites.

Materials designs, interactions and processes will be discussed in the context of specific applications.
There will be project activity based on special topics and/or case studies on recent advancements in functional materials.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  1. Define the various classes of functional materials and their properties
  2. Identify processing methods for specific materials/ compositions
  3. Practice material selections for specific technological needs
