Until 1992 she worked as lecturer at the University of Twente (NL) in the department of Mechanical Engineering, where she obtained her PhD. Until 2000 she worked in the Engineering Design Centre of the University of Cambridge (UK), initially as senior research associate and from 1995 as Assistant Director of the Engineering Design Centre. In 2000 she was appointed full professor at the University of Technology Berlin on the Chair of Engineering Design and Methodology. In 2007 she became vice-president for research of the University of Luxembourg and was appointed to the Chair in Engineering Design and Methodology. After the end of the mandate as vice-president in April 2013 she is back as full professor. In April 2013 she received an honorary doctorate from the Swedish Mälardalen University.
